TSOANI is an institution devoted to advanced research in ethnogenesis, cultural memory, and critical analysis of historical discourses, specialising in the scientific study of the origin and historical formation of the Roma people in Europe. Our work is grounded in interdisciplinary methodologies that integrate comparative historiography, population genetics, historical linguistics, cultural anthropology, critical archival science, and analytical genealogy.
Our fundamental epistemological principle
The modern official narrative on Roma origin — formulated between the 18th and 20th centuries — does not meet contemporary methodological standards. It is a paradigm built on partial linguistic comparisons, unverified inferences, and selective readings of sources, and it fails to explain the real complexity of the migratory, cultural, and population processes documented in Europe since the Late Middle Ages.
TSOANI therefore develops research aimed at the epistemic revision of that model and the construction of an alternative interpretive framework, based exclusively on verifiable evidence. Our approach combines:
Population genetics
To analyse the internal heterogeneity of European Roma groups and the presence of Mediterranean, Levantine, and Western European lineages.
Historical linguistics & Romani-Caló philology
To assess the evolution of linguistic varieties in relation to contact processes and identity reconfiguration.
Critical archival science
To reconstruct family and community trajectories from the 15th century onward through notarial, inquisitorial, census, and judicial sources.
Cultural anthropology
To study symbolic, ritual, and social continuity in Roma communities of Western Europe.
Analytical genealogy
To trace lineages and kinship networks across centuries of documented European history.

TSOANI operates under criteria of documentary traceability, methodological reproducibility, epistemic transparency, and compliance with FAIR principles, in line with the European Union's Open Science policies. Our goal is to produce robust explanatory models, verified evidence, and interdisciplinary analyses capable of correcting persistent historiographical errors and opening new avenues of research into Roma history and identity in Europe.
